He meditated in the Vira posture, still and unmoving, for such a long time that an anthill formed around him, covering his body with creepers and swarms of ants, making him appear like a mound of earth.
One day, after many years, a king named Saryati, who was wandering near the lake for amusement, came upon this spot with his 4,000 wives and his beautiful daughter Sukanya. As Sukanya wandered around, she stumbled upon the anthill where Chyavana was meditating. Curiosity prompted her to see glowing eyes near the anthill. Mistaking them for insects, she thoughtlessly pierced the eyes with a thorn. Chyavana, now in great pain and anger, used his powers to curse the king’s soldiers, causing them to suffer severe physical distress. The king, realizing that someone had wronged the sage, sought to find the cause. Sukanya confessed she had poked the sage’s eyes, thinking they were glowworms. As a reward for their aid, Chyavana promised the Aswins the privilege of drinking Soma, the divine nectar reserved only for higher gods. When Indra, king of the gods, tried to prevent this, Chyavana used his powers to summon a terrifying demon named Mada.
